I know I’m late on the update but GSC recently announced the pre-order for Hayakawa Yuzuko from the manga, Yuzuko Peppermint. The figure comes with a drama CD and pamphlet set, which probably are some illustrations from the manga or of the character. I’ve haven’t heard of the manga before but it does interest me and I’m willing to give it a go. What I think is the main attraction of this figure is the giant ball/bomb and chain Yuzuko is wrapped in. The detail of the links must of been a pain in the butt to sculpt! Yuzuko will be available in March 2010 and will cost 8,867円. Pre-orders now on HobbySearch and Toylet.
The American release of Tekkon Kinkreet came out a month ago. This includes the award winning film directed by Michael Arias and the original manga by Taiyo Matsumoto. Since I heard so much about Tekkon, I decided to read the manga before watching the film to get a sense of what Tekkon was all about.
The story of Tekkon Kinkreet is about the city of Treasure town and its “cat” inhabitants, two kids by the name of Kuro and Shiro (Black and White). The two survive by robbing and mugging people. There is no discrimination to who the victim is or what they do. The wild kids are threatened when an old gangster, Rat returns. Rat’s return leads to another more dangerous enemy, a foreign company injecting themselves into the town, tearing down old Treasure Town and ericting children amusement parks. The external threat is not the only thing the pair need to deal with, but the struggle within themselves in a town that is uncontrollably evolving.
Overall the manga is great, but the details concerning the stories arc is confusing. The interweaving of three main characters stories doesn’t seem strong enough for conflict and plot. The questions of why should we care for these characters start to cloud the mind. These details start to add up and become an annoyance at the end of the book. As for the art, its great with the european influence that Matsumoto has come to be know for. It definitely holds up for being a 17 year old manga. Too bad the movie is the other way around…
